Hey, I am not done! Take Charge of Interruptions!
Wouldn’t it be great if we came equipped with blinkers we could use to signal when we want to talk? At a business meeting we could visibly let people know we had something to say. Since we don’t, the next best thing is to learn how to manage interruptions.
When men interrupt, they usually aim to take the floor or take charge of the conversation. These interruptions are generally about power and require women to step up and get the floor back.
Women tend to interrupt less than men, out of an effort to be polite and let the other person finish before responding. Her talking patterns look at maintaining the relationship between people - the woman’s role. Men want to get to the bottom line. They want to hear the end result and take action - the man’s role - Mr. Fix-it.
Code Switch: Don’t take it personally when he interrupts. It’s part of the way he talks with his buds. But be ready to direct the discussion back to you and your topic.
Women, take charge! Manage his interruptions by finishing your thoughts and sentences before letting him respond or play Mr. Fix-it. Follow these steps when you find yourself being interrupted:
- Establish control by making brief eye contact with the interrupter. Don’t look too long, because then it seems like you’re asking permission.
- Make a statement that draws attention back to you and your conversation (for example, “I’ll take comments in a moment”). Use the interrupter’s name, if you know it. (“Steve, I wasn’t quite finished.”)
- Make eye contact with the group.
- Finish your statements or thought.

"The program around men and women talking by and at each other at work and on code switching was informative, interesting, and entertaining. Claire, this was our second meeting, and I wanted
to elaborate on how the club benefits members' professional growth by access to these programs.
Great job!"
Dear Dr. Nelson:
I wanted to thank you again for presenting Code Switching on March 3rd to the 10th Annual Women’s History Luncheon co-sponsored by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics Program (WISEM) at Colorado School of Mines. You did such a great job of talking about gender communication in a way that everyone, from our students to the President, could understand and appreciate.
This was one of the largest Women’s History Month Luncheons with over 230 students, faculty, staff and NREL employees in attendance. So many people thanked me for bringing you to campus-you were a big hit! They have particularly commented on your ability to make this topic interesting, entertaining, and informative.
Again, thank you for making the 2010 Women’s History Lecture Luncheon such a great event. I hope our paths cross again in the future!
Sincerely,
Debra K. Lasich
